“When you are growing up, there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully—the church, which belongs to God, and the public library, which belongs to you. The public library is a great equalizer.”--Keith Richards

As someone who believes that the core values of librarianship are equity and access, this comment by Keith Richards speaks to me. And makes me chuckle because a member of the coolest band in the universe surprised me with a comment about churches and libraries.

I think that libraries are incredibly important to our communities. They provide a meeting place, a spot for some educational or recreational reading, viewing or listening, and a place to think or dream. People see the library as a place to find out things because there are people to ask questions of and computers to try out on one’s own. Children learn to love books, teenagers lose themselves in other worlds in novels written for them, and adults who love to read find books in many formats—print, eBooks, and audiobooks. Anyone can learn just about anything through a resource that is found at the library, whether it’s a book or DVD on a topic, or an article found through one of our online resources. Diagnosing a car problem is possible through the Chilton’s database available at MeL.org, and learning how to best promote oneself in order to obtain a job is possible through the Job and Career Accelerator, also at MeL.org.

We are thrilled that Lapeer County’s citizens voted for our ballot proposal, a renewal of our 0.9 mill assessment. We appreciate the trust and confidence shown in our ability to provide programming, services and materials in an effective manner. If you have ideas for programs, services or materials that you want us to offer or purchase, please let me know.  Email or 810.664.9521. You may also stop at any one of our library locations with suggestions.
